I understand it can sometimes feel surprisingly overwhelming choosing a print for your space. There can be a few considerations, particularly in a space that already has art.

Recently a friend asked for help choosing a new artwork for her lounge. She had purchased a print last year that she loves and now wanted to add another piece, preferably by a different artist, to the blank wall next to it. The existing piece is a colourful botanical print of a painting. She said it was doing her head in trying to find something to ‘match’. 

She had looked at lots of options but said nothing felt quite right with the existing print. She wanted it to be in landscape orientation, quite large and within a budget.

When helping her work through it, we started looking at: 

• Print colour tones – tying in with, rather than matching the existing print

• Mockups – visualising potential prints in her actual space to get an idea of how they would look and feel alongside the existing print

• Frame colour – opting for a white frame to match the existing print frame

• Print finish – selecting paper rather than the canvas option 

The turning point was finding a print with complementary tones. It was a softer, different style of print, but they both shared the common theme of nature. Above all, she loved the piece and the place it depicted holds a special memory of her home country.

Once the print had been chosen, the other details such as the print finish and frame colour fell into place. Breaking the process down into steps helped the decision naturally unfold. 

Other furnishings, such as cushions in a lounge, can be a great way to create a cohesive colour scheme throughout the room. For example, her current cushions are all grey matching the couch. She’s also looking at adding cushions with accent colours picked up from the prints. 

It can be a journey choosing a print. Or sometimes you can see a print and ‘just know’ it’s the one for you, then find a place for it. 

Art is a personal choice. A piece may appeal as it captures a place, evokes a mood, or is simply something you are drawn to.
